I had just refreshed my Surface Pro 2 with Windows 8.1 Pro.
I could not get any Windows updates to work at all, anything I tried would just result in “Searching this computer for updates…”.
After some research I discovered that I needed to install KB2919355 before I could install any updates, however all attempts at installing KB2919355 resulted in the error: “The update is not applicable to your computer”.
After spending a lot of time looking for possible answers I found several suggestions, none of which resulted in an actual fix for me.
I tried:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
I eventually resolved the issue by installing a combination of the various patches recommended on the sites I found.
I installed the following patches in the order given:
Ensure that you reboot when prompted – don’t attempt to install all the patches at once (although this might work I don’t know…)

KB2938439* – KB2938439-x64

I was unable to find the updates marked * on the Microsoft Catalogue website – I have no idea why they are not listed.
NOTE: The above download links are for x64 versions – AND – the links may or may not work (Microsoft seem to change the links quite frequently).
If the links fail simply search Google for KBxxxxx download and you should find a link.
